Welsh corgi pembroke and cardigan: comparison, photos and characteristics

Вельш-корги Welsh corgi are the smallest sheepdogs, 25-30 cm tall and weighing up to 13.5 kg. Many compare them with the clumsy and charming mongrels who flock in the city gates. But fans of this breed know that these noble dogs are capable of heroic deeds. They are smart and fast shepherds and magnificent detectives who live up to 15 years. In addition to these talents, they have a great sense of humor, an excellent character and an astute mind. Welsh Corgi is great for beginner dogs as a first pet.

History of the breed

There is a magical legend that the corgi were elves' horses, which gave a pair of puppies to the cowherd children. Therefore, the marks on the backs of the corgi say that it is the saddle of the elves.

The breed has a long history of more than a thousand years. Recently, researchers discovered in the south of Wales in the peat bog, the Brecon Beacon bone dog, which is very similar to the modern welsh corgi. The find dates back to the 9th century. However, scientists believe that the breed appeared in the province much earlier - in 500 BC.

In those distant times, local residents used straight-legged undersized sheep dogs as shepherds. The flocks of these dogs independently led the herds to the pastures, when necessary, fearlessly drove the wolves and robbers, and in the evening they returned the animals to the pen. It is known that the best representatives of the breed coped with these duties alone: the dogs not only helped the shepherd, but skillfully replaced him.

Wales residents received most of the proceeds from the sale of meat in the English markets. Therefore, farmers needed a huge number of four-legged shepherds. Over time, the farms of the province also began to breed geese and ducks. Corgi were useful here. Thanks to teamwork, they did not allow nonsense birds to scatter. In addition, the dogs guarded the herd in silence, not frightening him with barking.

Small, unpretentious, but indispensable dogs were valued in weight of gold. For a good specimen a whole bull was given, while the best four-legged hunters of the king did not cost a ram.
Priceless breed was even mentioned in the code of laws of the Welsh king Khivela Dobroi. The monarch who ruled in the 10th century guaranteed compensation to the owners of Corgi in the form of ox for an accidental death of a pet. After all, the death of a smart worker left a whole herd without supervision and threatened the farm with ruin. By the way, the killer of a dog could be executed.

One of the theories of Welsh-Corgi origin is that the ancestors of the breed were brought to England by Scandinavian Vikings in the 9th century.

Many years later, fearless shepherds were able to master more complex professions. It turned out that these dogs perfectly smell traces even in urban conditions - on concrete and asphalt roads. Therefore, they began to train as a bloodhound. And nowadays the breed successfully helps policemen in the search for drugs.

Two varieties of the breed

Researchers had difficulty tracing the history of the breed, but it is almost impossible to compile its pedigree. Welsh corgi led the life of rural dogs, freely interbreeding with other relatives. Therefore, the livestock as a whole was distinguished by diversity.

Until the end of the 19th century, the breed did not leave Wales. Nobody knew about their existence. In 1892, the nameless dogs were presented to the public at a competition of shepherd dogs. And only in 1920 the breed was recognized as independent and officially received the name welsh-corgi.

In 1925 a club of breeders appeared - and dogs began to appear more often in English exhibitions. However, it was very difficult to evaluate such diverse dogs. Some representatives of the breed were seriously different from each other. Therefore, a year later the welsh-corgi were divided into two varieties - the cardigan and pembroke, which they began to breed separately. Probably they lived in Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire - two counties of Wales, separated by the Cambrian mountain chain. Isolation allowed them to avoid crossing and helped to consolidate various traits. It is believed that the cardigans were influenced by tactful dogs, and on pembrokes - by Spitz. Between themselves, they are quite different, both in appearance and in character.

In 1932, Welsh Corgi puppy Duki crossed the threshold of Buckingham Palace. Funny pembroke was a gift to Elizabeth II, the future Queen of England, from her father, the Duke of York. From that moment the four-legged shepherd forgot about the service and turned into a lap-dog. Elizabeth's second love for the breed promoted the growth of popularity of pembrokes and cardigans all over the world. The breed often appears on television and in the cinema, it is given to famous writers and actors, athletes. In 2003, a bronze monument of Welsh-Corgi Pembroke was established in New Zealand. Sculptor David Marshall has depicted three dogs in full size. They stomp one after another, and one of them stretches its nose to the ice cream lying on the asphalt.

Appearance

A whole century of breeding, improving the standard and exhibitions greatly changed the welsh corgi. The dogs became 10 cm lower and 2 kg lighter, and their limbs shortened. Gradually, the breed found that imposing and elegant exterior, which conquered many dog lovers. Modern short-legged corgi are similar to small withered foxes. Both species have a wedge-like muzzle that widens in the forehead and is flat between the ears. However, the cardigan has a domed forehead: the transition is clearly pronounced, and the eyes are deepened. These are very agile and powerful animals with a long neck, a broad chest and strong back.

At the royal court, they are divorced for almost a hundred years.

These dogs are smaller than cardigans. Their muzzle is more like a fox. The coat is bright and golden, longer than the cardigans. On the muzzle, paws and chest white marks with clear outlines. The tail is absent, the paws are very short, which greatly reduces the working qualities.

Color of corg can be red-white, tricolor (white, black and tawny), deer, black (rarely). There are no whites.

By nature pembrokes are clockwork, fun and very active. They are excellent companions, charging everyone with optimism.

And the character he is serious, loves to work methodically.

The most common color is brindle and blue-merle (black and white).

General character traits of welsh corgi

Fortunately, however the breeders experimented with the appearance of the Corgi, the good nature of the breed was preserved. These are very nice, faithful and unpretentious dogs. This breed is focused on the person, perfectly feels the mood of the owner, unobtrusive and is able to support in time. They easily get along with cats and other animals. Children are tremblingly guarded. They have established themselves as ideal companions for families living in large cities. They are easy to keep even in small apartments, provided that the pet will often play. They get along well in the city and adapt themselves to any climate without much difficulty, but they feel better in the cold than in the heat.

In general, Corgi are balanced, inquisitive and cheerful dogs. Both varieties adore children and are happy to participate in games, without showing either timidity or anger.
This breed has a rare innate sense of humor, which even entered the official standard. She is very fond of amusements, and she is ready to hoot the whole day long, if only the surrounding people are not bored. A brand of corgi is their smile. At least, it seems that they are constantly smiling because of the black rim around the mouth.

But do not forget that the corgi are the blood of ancient sheep dogs. Therefore, obedience must be taught from childhood, so that the favorite inadvertently did not learn bad habits. It is important to be persistent and strict in time. Otherwise, the quick-witted dog will quickly remember how to apply one's own charisma in selfish interests. But they can not be called stupid and rancorous.

Fortunately, Welsh Corgi is very well trained. Training these dogs grasp on the fly and with pleasure perform exercises. For them, the norm is to remember the team from the second to the third time. They study with great interest circus numbers, participate in various competitions, including agility. You can go even further and train corgi in various sports disciplines. This breed quickly and dexterously moves, can develop good speed, perfectly floats. Such a dog will gladly join your morning jogs. But do not strain her with sports until she's grown up.

If the training was timely and effective, the grown-up puppy will never create problems in everyday life. Despite his tirelessness and endurance, he will have patience and tact. A boredom does not encourage him to chew things and break furniture in the apartment.
Welsh corgi are not noisy at all. Being shepherds, welsh corgi rarely used barking, but this breed actually has a wide voice range. They can bark low, rude, if you notice strangers, or ringing, gulpily during gay games. In addition, corgi are able to roar, whimper, squeal and even grunt. But these manners are trained if desired.

Features of care for welsh corgi

They do not need complex care. Healthy dogs of this breed practically do not smell of dog, and especially sensitive people the smell from them is compared to the smell of poplar buds.

Corg wool falls out twice a year only during moulting. Nevertheless, the cardigan should be combed daily, and the pembroke weekly. Because of small paws in wet and dirty weather, the dog's stomach has to be washed after every walk. But a big washing of a dog is better arranged no more than once every six months. It is better to time it to seasonal molt, so that you can comb the old wool at the same time.

Among the Corgi, paradontosis and tartar are common, therefore it is necessary to regularly attend to the teeth of the dog, brush them with a special paste, acquire chewing bones, strengthen the teeth of the animal and help to clean the oral cavity.

Welsh corgi are often prone to overeating, so the owner should carefully monitor the diet of the dog and not succumb to its charm and ingenuity. These dogs will eat anything they would not be offered. The love of food is fraught with excess weight and heart problems. Therefore, feed your pet moderately and always play with him during walks.

Also, dogs of this breed are prone to such diseases as: epilepsy, raw eczema, degenerative myelopathy, glaucoma, progressive atrophy of the retina. Difficult childbirth is possible. The elongated torso of welsh corgi in rare cases can lead to some diseases of the spine.
