Smooth-haired fox terrier

|Attitudes towards children|
Breeds, in the names of which there is the word "terrier", very much. All of them are more or less relatives, and their homeland is the British Isles. Since the 11th century, in written sources one can find many mentions of underground or northerners. According to surviving images of these dogs, one can judge that they have much in common with the modern smooth-haired fox terrier.
Already in the Middle Ages, people realized the need to create a breed type adapted for hunting foxes and rodents. And by the beginning of the New Time, you can already talk about targeted breeding work. Earlier we were known by the lover and the breeder of the Fox Terriers, Count Monteey. His dogs became famous for their hunting abilities, determination, spitefulness and activity.
Of course, first attention was paid to the temperament and working skills of dogs, and the exterior of the breed was of secondary importance. However, under the influence of the choice for further breeding for the most part the same type of dogs, as early as the 17th century, the breed type of fox terrier began to take shape. The first dogs of this breed were more massive and rugged, with a wide head on a short neck. They appeared as a result of the crossing of varieties of British terriers: smooth-haired, white and wire-haired.
In addition to these main ancestors, the Fox Terriers also received other blood: bull terriers , hounds, dachshunds , beagles and spaniels. But these breeds were used carefully so as not to destroy the original kind of terriers, but only to improve its working qualities.
The excitement around the breed began in the second half of the 18th century and was explained by the incredible popularity of hunting for foxes. This kind of hunting was for the British not just entertainment, it turned into a national sport, into a mass hobby. Hunting clubs were created, which showed a keen interest in the fox terrier, although the focus was on smooth-haired dogs. Their task in hunting was to drive the fox, badger or other nerd beast from under the ground. The closest colleagues of the fox terriers are foxgounds, hounds who effectively drove the beast, but they were powerless if the beast was hiding in a hole. The Fox Terriers did not necessarily have to run fast, as a rule, they were transported by hunter-riders on horses in saddlebags or sack bags.
Much attention in the breeding of the breed was focused on two aspects: color and ability to climb into narrow holes. The color should have been dominated by a white background, so that the fox terrier emerging from the burrow was very different from the red fox. Otherwise, a brown dog could be shot in a hurry. Dogs with a larger skeleton of the chest and skull did not slip into narrow holes or could get stuck in them. Therefore, the selection was conducted in the direction of lighter dogs, with narrow shoulders and thin muzzles that successfully coped with lasagne in close underground burrows.
Massive fox terriers of the old type were rejected for further breeding. Especially seriously began to approach this issue after 1862. This led to the fact that at the end of the 19th century a new type of fox terrier appeared. He had a narrow head, small ears, a long neck, the distance between the shoulder blades was reduced, and the shoulders narrowed.
Foxes actively participated in all "dog" events in England. They were presented at the first English dog show in 1859. Monobreed exposition of fox-terriers took place in 1886, 175 dogs were registered on it, while the rough-haired foxes were less than 1/3 of the participants.
In 1875, the Fox Terrier Club was established. Approximately at this time, they began to talk about the need to divide the fox terriers into two types: smooth-haired and wire-haired. But there was one breed standard, and on the whole, preference was given to smooth-haired fox terriers, which were a kind of elite of the breed. Running forward, we can say that now dogs with tough hair are clearly in the lead in numbers and popularity, judging by the registration of puppies in modern breed clubs.
In the past centuries, hunters appreciated the working qualities of smooth Foxes, although in reality the hairworm fox terriers possessed the same set of qualities. But the impressive dogs with tough hair were appreciated by fans of decorative pets and started to get them as companions. This explains the fact that when the passion for hunting for foxes subsided and the fox terriers became mostly decorative dogs, it was the tough-haired handsome who captured the palm tree.
In the 80s of the 19th century, the fox terrier fame spread across the European continent. These dogs were taken to Germany, Austria, Russia and other countries. Of course, the puppies for export had to meet high requirements, because they represented English cynology, they were a symbol of her achievements. Therefore, large exporters were only reliable breeders, such as Francis Redmont. His cattery became famous for a record number of champions. There was even such a thing as the era of the Redmonth Terriers.
In the history of the Fox Terriers, a great contribution was made by German breeders. A vigorous interest in the breed led to the appearance of a large number of nurseries and to the improvement of the hunting qualities of the dog. The training of dogs began around the age of one year in artificially created conditions. As a basis, the model of Fulda's burrow was chosen, the design of which represented a broken line. For picking, young foxes or raccoons were chosen, which allowed the fox terrier to feel its strength and to experience hunting excitement. At the beginning of the 20th century, the breeding of the Fox Terriers in Germany was at the peak of popularity. This breed was used by the Germans not only as a normal breed, but also for hunting game and ungulates.
The breeders of the Fox Terriers were crowned people. For example, the English King Edward Seventh, who belonged to the Fox Terrier Caesar. After the death of the king, the dog was killed by grief, which is narrated in the painting "Silent Mountain" and the book "Where is the Master?".
History of the Fox Terriers in Russia
The first representative of the breed was brought to St. Petersburg from England in the early 1860's. From the crossing of this bitch with the bull terrier, a litter was obtained, from which one of the puppies came to Prince BD Golitsin. After that, the prince became a great lover of this breed.
At the dog show in Russia in 1889, 4 fox terriers were introduced, after 10 years they were already 49. At the same time, the exhibits demonstrated the working qualities of dogs with tests in an artificial burrow. In Russia, many fox-terrier nurseries are being organized, there are enthusiastic breeders of this breed. One of them was K. A. Beno, who in 1906 published a book "Fox Terrier" with a lot of interesting facts from the life of the breed. In 1900, the Russian Society of Foxtier Fans and Dachshunds was formed. Actively held exhibitions, field trials of this breed, and on the whole interest to the fox terriers from Russian breeders and hunters was at a high level.
Now, the woolly fox terriers are mostly companion dogs, but you can always find representatives of the breed with excellent working qualities.
Fox Terrier breed standard: basic characteristics
Fox Terriers are of two kinds: the hairless fox terrier and the smooth-haired fox terrier.
For the coarse-haired fox terrier is characterized by a dense, thick wool of medium length, a long rectangular muzzle with a hard beard.
Both species have a dry sturdy physique, muscular legs due to which the fox terrier has excellent speed and stunning reflexes. The fox terrier has an unusual tail. He's shaking, not wagging. The tail looks up and it is strong enough to be able to pull the dog out of trouble for it. Fox Terrier is a cheerful, energetic, irritable dog.
The nose leads her from one misdemeanor to another. Usually the owner does not cope with the fox terrier, which was actually driven to the hunt. Most breeders now breed dogs with a softer character.
Fox Terrier is a very active dog, which means that it needs space to move. But this small dog can live in small rooms, for example in apartments.
FCI's leading cynological federation adopted different standards for smooth-haired and coarse-haired fox terriers, which are considered independent breeds. However, these standards have much in common, the differences are mainly related to the coat of dogs.
Consider the standard of the hairless fox terrier, as the most common breed in dog breeds.
The dog is approximately square. With a strong skeleton, but not rough and not shapeless. It makes an impression of lightness and activity. In the rack it looks like a stretched spring.
The skull looks flat, has a gradually tapering shape. Muzzle and skull are approximately the same in length. The transition from the forehead to the muzzle is almost not expressed. Cheekbones are narrow, bulging cheeks are excluded.
Scissor bite. Strong jaws tightly compressed.
Eyes of a dark color, a rounded shape is desirable. Planted at the optimal distance from each other: that is, not too wide and not too close to the ears.
Ears are small, triangular in shape. The ends of the ears are lowered forward towards the cheekbones.
The neck is long and muscular. If you look from the side, you see a smooth curve of the neck, which becomes wider to the shoulders.
The back is short and strong, the loin is very short.
The thorax is deep and not wide.
The tail is high and set up. Strong and direct. The tail is usually docked.
Forelegs straight and strong. The shoulders are long, obliquely set.
The hind legs are strong and muscular. Thighs long, knees well curved.
Paws are collected in a lump, with elastic pads.
The wool is dense, resembles a wire in stiffness. On the back and limbs, the coat is longer and coarse than on the shoulders and sides. On the jaws, the wool is long, which gives a peculiar expression to the muzzle.
The coat color is predominantly white. On a white background there are black, black and reddish-brown spots.
Height of males at the withers: up to 39 cm, bitches a couple of centimeters shorter.
The ideal weight of males: 8-8.25 kg, bitches are slightly lighter.
Fox Terrier Iglu was a member of the expedition to Antarctica under the leadership of Admiral Byrd.
The character of the fox terrier
The present fox terrier in character resembles an English gentleman. He is fearless and friendly, with aristocratic manners and impressive appearance. The look of the fox terrier conveys his mind and vitality.
When you look at a fox terrier in a stand, you are given its tension: it immediately becomes clear that at any moment it is ready to break from its place. The reaction of the fox-terrier is lightning fast, the movements are rapid, and he himself gives the impression of a dog with a clockwork temperament. This little dog is like a perpetual motion machine: it is always ready to move and frolic, for this it has enough of the slightest excuse. The fox terrier of their dogs, about which one can say that they are starting from a half-turn. They react to any action of the owner and other animals, so to calm and endure them to accustom them hard enough.
Excessive mobility combined with a fair amount of stubbornness and its view of everything that is happening makes this breed not so easy to learn. But those who believe that these difficulties are connected with the intellectual abilities of the fox terriers are not right. They are very clever and smart dogs . Moreover, they are much faster able to perform host commands than many other breeds thanks to instant reaction. Just some representatives of the breed are endowed with a fair share of independence, and their vision of the situation may not coincide with the wishes of the owner.
In the rest it is pleasant in dialogue and true friends of the person. Foxes are very communicative creatures and are initially tuned for friendly communication. True, if a dog or a person does not reciprocate and show aggression, they too will not remain in debt. Do not forget that in these charming dogs there is the blood of their fellow bull terriers, so it's better not to wake the beast in them.
Some owners note the increased belligerence of their fox terriers, aimed at unfamiliar dogs, especially mating dogs. Another feature of the character of the fox terrier is the lack of tolerance for what he does not like. He can growl even at the master, if he has done something unauthorized, in the opinion of the fox who is watching him attentively, an act. This, of course, is not very pleasant, but on the other hand, calls on the owners of this breed to look for new ways to manage the dog. For example, physical punishment, the fox terrier will not stand and will necessarily resist violence.
This breed is easily distracted and carried away, therefore, without a lead in the streets with foxes, walking is not recommended. They can chase a cat or run across a road, seeing something interesting on the other side of the street. When the fox terrier is carried away by something and in the hunting passion pursues the object of its hobby, stopping it with shouts is almost impossible.
Also, it should be borne in mind that this breed is not quieter, the Foxes like to make a noise and bark from heart. They also adore chasing cats and various small animals. So if you plan to introduce your favorite rabbit, chinchilla or hamster to the fox terrier, then this is not the best idea. As for the attitude towards children, the fox terriers love them, because they themselves remain in their souls all their lives, but at the same time, in the process of a mobile game, a child can bite if he hurts them. In this case, the fox terrier will not analyze whether the child did this intentionally or accidentally. Therefore, foxes and small children are not a very good combination.
But in one fox terriers are simply unmatched - it's in the ability to recharge your owner's energy. Next to Fox it is simply impossible to fall into depression, so he is energetic and life-loving. This dog will force you to rise from the couch and look at the world cheerfully and with optimism. Exactly how your favorite fox looks at the world.
Famous racer Charles Rolls always let the engine hear his fox terrier Joe. The driver did not get into the car, if Joe caught a malfunction in the engine.
Fox Terriers live more than 15 years.
It will not be easy to train this independent terrier. Many people think that fox terriers do not give in to training. And indeed it is. Because they do not give you too much attention, they should be taught to the contrary. You must definitely start socializing your dog with other puppies at a very young age.
In general, the fox terrier is a healthy breed. Some are prone to cataracts, some dogs have problems with the shoulders and pelvis. A hairless fox-terrier can get inflamed skin, if not care for properly for the hair and do not trim.
Maintenance and care
Handsome and mischievous fox terrier because of its small size is perfect for keeping in the apartment. But your interior will not be affected only if you can provide the dog with enough exercise to walk. It is best if the fox terrier does not just walk, but actively trains in running, overcoming obstacles, performing various commands. Then at home he will be more calm, although a quiet and calm fox terrier is difficult to imagine.
If the fox terrier is kept in the courtyard of a private house or in an enclosure, then pay attention to its excessive desire to dig the earth. His energy is enough to dig up your entire site, so the dog must somehow be protected, or he will not leave your favorite flowers alone and will not let grow vegetables. Another problem is the arrangement of digging under the fences in order to escape.
In the care of the woolly fox terrier, the condition of the wool requires special attention. The most surprising is that these dogs do not shed, but at the same time the hair needs regular care: it needs to be combed with a rigid brush, and several times a year it is trimmed. Categorically, you can not use scissors to remove dead wool, otherwise the fox terrier will turn into a dog resembling a lamb with cotton wool.
For an exhibition dog, it is better to use the services of a professional groomer who will pluck out the coat in such a way as to emphasize the athletic build-up of fox. It is possible to engage in trimming and independently, the essence of this method is the careful plucking of dead wool. Help in this special tools: a knife and a comb. This puppy should be taught from an early age, otherwise he will actively resist such a procedure.
Trimming is needed not only for beauty, but also for the health of the dog. If the dead hair is not removed in time, the dog will scratch the skin. There will be scabies, eczema and other skin problems.
Feed the fox terrier can be a special food for dogs, and natural food. The standard diet of an adult fox terrier consists of the following products:
- Raw or slightly boiled beef;
- Low-fat cottage cheese;
- Vegetables (mainly carrots, beets and greens, and potatoes are not a nutritious product for the dog);
- A little fruit, for example, shabby apples;
- vegetable oil;
- Cereal flakes (it is better not to cook them, but simply pour hot meat-bone broth before feeding);
- Vitamin and mineral fertilizing.
Fox terriers are dangerously overeating, so you should count servings based on their weight. You can not follow the path of the owners, who compensate for the lack of nutrition by the amount of cheap food, for example, they feed the fox terrier with large portions of porridge or cook pasta. Such food will inevitably result in health problems.
In Jerome K. Jerome's book "Three in a boat, not counting a dog", one of the heroes is the funny fox of Montmorency, whom everyone laughs at with their antics.
Choosing a fox terrier puppy
Choosing a puppy, do not need to be guided by the first spiritual impulse, after seeing a pretty face in the photo in the ad. Remember that the appearance of the puppy is difficult to say who will grow from it: a half-breed or champion of his breed. It is better to visit the exhibition, look at the working trials of the Fox Terriers, perhaps you are interested in some representative of the breed that you want to wait for the puppy from him.
You can do an active search for a puppy or, conversely, leave a message on a thematic forum about the willingness to purchase a fox terrier and wait for interesting suggestions.
