In the old days, cruel hobbies were common, and most breeds of dogs were bred not for domestic maintenance or protection, but for hunting, baiting large animals and especially dog fighting. For someone it was fun and an opportunity to earn on the stakes. Others, mostly rich people, wanted spectacles to somehow diversify their measured life. The Bull Terrier is the child of that harsh era. His ancestors were successful fighters. But thanks to the breeders-perfectionists the breed has acquired a new and stylish image. So when cruel spectacles were banned, thanks to the original appearance of the bull terriers found their place under the sun.

About the name of the breed
Like most terriers, "boules" were bred in the UK. So the name of the breed has English roots. "Bull" means "bull", with which the bulldogs participating in the breeding fought in the arenas. And the "terrier" refers to the second type of dog that participated in the selection.
History of the appearance of the breed
To please the public
Before the ban of 1835 in England, it was popular to bully the bulls with dogs. The ancestors of English bulldogs took part in it. Then the breed looked different: tall legs and a square wide head allowed it to dexterously fight large animals. But when the authorities banned cruel entertainment, the organizers of the bloody spectacles found other ways of earning - dog fights and baiting of rats. Moreover, an improvised arena could be organized in any pub. Here there were poor people and rich people.
But soon it turned out that the fighting bulldogs are completely not adapted to new kinds of fights. It required even more agility and cunning. Alas, the short-haired strong-backed bulldogs could not adapt: the battles became too dull.
Then fighting bulldogs and began to cross with other breeds. The most promising was breeding with terriers. The received dogs have not lost strength and perseverance, and in addition have received ingenuity and dexterity. The new four-legged fighters were named simply - "Old Bul-and-Terrier". They became the progenitors of modern bull terriers.
The chance of survival
The first old bull-and-terriers looked awkward: a heavy body, curved paws, a broad head with a dull muzzle. But the "breeding monsters" coped with their fighting duties. In new generations, the traits became more distinct: the paws were stretched, and the muzzle was sharpened. And yet they were far from the ideal of beauty.
This worried the merchant and admirer of James Hinks dogs. He decided to improve the appearance of the breed, while retaining its fighting qualities. His experiments began in the mid-1850s. And already in 1862 he showed his best pet at the show in his native Birmingham.
As a true businessman, he realized that cruel entertainment is gradually disappearing into the past. So, the public will lose interest in ugly fighting dogs. And only a noble appearance could give the breed a chance to survive and draw the attention of aristocrats to it.
So Hinks decided to make his dogs completely white. For this he used in selection of white Old English terriers and Dalmatians. So there were elegant, but still courageous dogs. And that the public did not confuse new dogs with an ancestral ancestors, James gave his pets a simpler name - the bull terrier.
The bull terrier revealed the most remarkable qualities, which he absorbed from the dogs of his predecessors, namely endurance, high intelligence, activity. In England, he immediately received recognition and the love of dog breeders. The content of the white bull terrier was considered fashionable. And in the beginning of the twentieth century, the colored bull terrier was already breeding.
White and multicolored
In 1864, two Hinks dogs, the white bull terriers Madmen and Puss became champions. And although they were still different from modern bull terriers, the breed was already gaining popularity. She was interested in the military and migrants, so soon along with the English colonists, Hinks dogs settled on different continents. Then noble "Bulls" fell in love with students and teachers at Oxford University.
But there were still many problems that the breeders had to solve. In 1985, the British authorities banned eared cupping. This little thing almost did not deprive the breed of popularity, as uncircumcised ears spoiled the appearance. Fortunately, for quite a short time the breeders managed to bring out individuals with naturally standing ears.
But, perhaps, the biggest problem was the discrimination of dogs with color. To many, they seemed not noble enough. When colorful bull terriers won at the shows in England, most of the breeders protested the decision of the judges. After all, if you give titles to non-white dogs and use them in breeding, the white line of the breed may degenerate. Because of this, in the matings, not only colored dogs, but also white ones, whose colored ancestors were present in the pedigree, ceased to be used.
But this decision nearly killed the breed. The long-term selection of white individuals led to a depletion of the gene pool of bull terriers. Together with this dogs inherited from their relatives, English white terriers, many vices: deafness, infertility, blue eyes.
By 1950, the number of sick pups had increased. And only then to save the breed had to recognize the colored bull terrier and allow them to breed. Breeders remembered in time that in 1936 the title of champion in England and America won the male Rebel of Blight, whose parents were colored bull terriers.
It is interesting that the original breeders of the old bulldogs and terriers did not accept the white "boules" of Hinks seriously. They said that out of beautiful dogs, bad fighters are getting. Then James made a fateful bet. He put out his white forty-pound bitch Puss against a sixty-pound old dog. Half an hour later, Puss severely dealt with the opponent. The winning bet James earned £ 5 and a box of champagne. And his pet, who received a minimum of wounds, the very next day won the title at the dog show.
Standard: the main characteristics of the bull terrier
Strangely enough, but the standard of this breed of dogs is very vague. Weight can vary from 18 to 30 kg. And the height is from 30 to 45 cm. The growth is limited by a miniature bull terrier. Its height should not exceed 35.5 cm. With a weight of 18 to 30 kg, it is important that the dog does not look very fattened or, conversely, very thin.
Everything converges on the main thing - it's a very muscular, strong dog.
The head is low set, strong, long, shaped like an egg. On it there should be no bends, distortions. Strong lower jaw with scissor bite. Brightly pronounced, open nostrils.
Eyes are dark brown in color, narrow, triangular in shape. Ears are erect, closely located to each other. Legs strong and muscular, very firm, strong. The torso is round the bull terrier. Thorax with pronounced muscles, rather wide. The tail is short and tapers towards the end.
If the bull terrier is white, then the colored spots can only be on the ears and head. If it is colored, then the color suit should predominate over white.
Masculine and stylish
Bullterriers of the modern type appeared only in 1928. The first exemplary dog was Lord Gladiator. His muzzle was lowered - this is the so-called "downside". In the profile, it resembled an arc, which was going downward, like a claw of a cancer or fingers of a man, grabbing something. The head became egg-shaped. It was this feature that made the grasp of the bull terrier very powerful, and she instantly distinguished the breed against the background of other dogs.
Lord Gladiator retained the already existing in the bull terrier features. His muscular body was perfect. Harmonious proportions, slanting small eyes, powerful lower jaw with a scissors bite, strong limbs - all this formed the image of a serious and brave dog, but at the same time not devoid of style.
And soon as a result of selection to the classic pure white color, others were added: black, brindle, red, red, tricolor combination. With such an ex-terrier the breed has reached our days. And the variety of coat colors increased the number of admirers of bull terriers.
The course on mini
At the beginning of selection of the breed in litters of bull terriers there were dogs of different sizes. Individual breeders began to select the smallest individuals and cross. Also, probably, Jack-Russell Terriers and fox terriers took part in the breeding. As a result, miniature bull terriers have turned out, which were first used for baiting the rats. They do not differ much from their relatives. Only their height - from 25 to 35 cm at the withers, and weight - from 11 to 15 kg.
Dog breed Bull Terrier is considered a fighting dog . She does not feel pain, strong, dexterous. But like in other breeds of dogs, it all depends on education. If a real friendship exists between a man and a dog, if the dog has learned from childhood that the master is the chief, he is the leader and submission to him must be unquestioning, then the best friend than the bull terrier can not be found.
This is a very active, playful, restless nature. Before you take the house of the bull terrier, you must be prepared for daily, many hours of walking. Therefore, such a dog will suit young, energetic masters, but not elderly retirees.
Initially, this breed, although it is bred as a fighting dog, is not directed against a person. According to the standard, only balanced, adequate individuals should remain in the litter.
Aggression and bitterness is developed in the dog in the process of improper upbringing and maintenance. The Bull Terrier is jealous and moody. He will never agree to obtuse submission and slavery. This, too, must be taken into account when acquiring this breed of dogs. It is necessary to show a lot of patience, love and care to properly raise a dog, to properly socialize it. And since she has a high intellect and her mind, she will gladly respond to a kind and friendly attitude, will willingly obey a just leader, that is, a master. And then you can not find a friend more faithfully.

Maintenance and care
Bull terrier - the dog is smooth-haired. She does not require any special care. She has molting twice a year - in spring and autumn. Wool is easily removed with a special glove or small brush. After a walk, she does not have to arrange a bath too. It is enough to wipe with a sponge or a damp towel. Check ears and eyes for inflammation. Bull Terrier ears are usually not affected by inflammatory processes. But prevention is not a problem. The claws of a dog are worn during walks themselves. But if they began to act outside the pads, they must be cut.
Since the bull terrier is very mobile, walks with it too must be active. Let him run into plenty, play with the ball, jump over the crossbar. First, it will always keep him in good physical shape (these dogs are prone to obesity), and secondly, at home he will be already pacified and imposing, and this will create a quiet time for the owners.
Training is not necessary for every dog, but everyone should get a good education.
